Philosophy of KapwaSilentia
Trinitarian Contemplative Spiritual Direction

KapwaSilentia came to fruition while completing my graduate studies, a Doctor of Ministry specializing in Christian Spiritual Formation. During that season, I embarked on a profound and enlightening spiritual exploration, seeking to redefine what it means for me to be a Filipina American devoted to the teachings of Jesus. This personal odyssey, sparked by a renewed interest in my ancestral cultural heritage, colonial history, and immigrant experience, has led to deep reflection on how these experiences have shaped my relationship with God, Christianity, and the world Jesus calls us to love. While discoveries were, at times, disorienting, I was nonetheless, and continue to be, blessed by the presence of God and the guiding influence of the Holy Spirit throughout the journey. I have also been buoyed by fellow sojourners, my faith community, and spiritual friendships, all of whom continue to bring me back to the deep well of God’s wisdom and love. Through this process and by His grace, God’s Spirit allowed me to unearth, reclaim, and cultivate a treasure trove of Filipino cultural values, the core of which resonated with and enriched my soul - kapwa.

Kapwa, roughly translated as “shared identity,” emphasizes the interconnectedness of people and is deeply rooted in Filipino culture. At its highest ideal, kapwa fosters the belief that I am not fully human without you, and you are not fully human without me. Kapwa shapes the way individuals interact with one another, fostering a strong sense of community and collective identity. This is evident in the honor shown to elders, the care given to those in need, and the treatment of neighbors, even strangers. Kapwa also shows up in our interconnectedness with and respect for the natural environment, which nourishes and sustains us.

Throughout this reawakening of a holy curiosity about my cultural heritage, I've come to realize that the concept of kapwa reflects the relational nature of the Triune God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Trinity embodies the perfect community of love, where each Person of the Trinity exists in an eternal, selfless relationship with each other. The essence of kapwa mirrors this divine relationship, calling individuals to live in mutual indwelling, and reflecting unity and love within the Godhead. Just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are in perfect harmony, we can strive to maintain harmony in our relationships with others and with the Trinity, guided by the principles of kapwa.

Silentia, originating from the Latin term for silence, embodies the practice of introspective quietness. In the context of KapwaSilentia, silence is not just the absence of noise, but a state of inner tranquility that enables a deeper connection with the divine and with one another. It is within this holy silence that individuals can genuinely attune themselves to the voice of the sacred and encounter His presence through the accompaniment of a spiritual director.

Thus, KapwaSilentia is not merely an idea; it is a profound approach to spiritual guidance that has the power to transform one’s relationship with the divine. KapwaSilentia deeply respects the interconnectedness of all individuals and the mystery of the Triune God, offering a path of inner transformation and spiritual growth, and inspiring hope in all who seek spiritual direction. 

Combining the Filipino value of kapwa with the contemplative practice of silentia paves the way for rich encounters with the divine triune community of love. This approach encourages both the spiritual director and the directee to embody the relational love found at the core of the Triune God, drawing the directee into a meaningful journey and nurturing a sense of God's call and will for their life.

Embracing Kapwa in Spiritual Direction: In a KapwaSilentia session, the director plays a crucial role in creating a safe and open space for the directee to share their experiences of God. The director's guidance and support are instrumental in recognizing and honoring the shared divine presence within each other. This mutual recognition fosters a space of trust and openness, where both can journey together to seek a deeper understanding of God’s will and presence in the directee’s life. The practice of kapwa within this context emphasizes that spiritual growth is not a solitary endeavor but a communal one rooted in the relational love of the Trinity.

Practicing Silentia in Contemplation: Silence is at the heart of the contemplative aspect of KapwaSilentia. Through intentional periods of silence, the directee is guided to quiet their mind and open their heart to the subtle movements of the Holy Spirit. This practice helps to cultivate an inner stillness that allows for a more profound encounter with the divine mystery of the Trinity. The director, in turn, plays a crucial and active role in this process, listening attentively to the directee and the promptings of the Spirit, thereby creating a space where divine communication can unfold.

Contemplation of the Divine Triune Community: The ultimate aim of KapwaSilentia is to guide both the director and the directee into a deeper contemplation of the triune community of love. By reflecting on the relational dynamics of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, directees are invited to consider their relationships and how they might more fully embody the self-giving love exemplified by the Trinity. This reflective and transformative contemplation fosters a broader sense of kapwa within the larger community, engaging individuals in a deep and meaningful reflection.

Companionship for the Journey of Reconstruction: If you are of Filipino descent who finds yourself wrestling with the faith you inherited, wondering what to treasure and what to release, or how to follow Jesus in the midst of your questions, you are not alone. Many of us carry stories shaped by migration, colonialism, family expectations, and different expressions of Christianity. Spiritual direction is not a place where someone tells you what to believe. Rather, it is a scared space to listen to God’s voice together; to notice His gentle movements, to bring your questions honestly before Him, and to trust that His love is spacious enough to hold all of your doubts and deepest hopes.
